At Resource Institute, our mission is simple: we help communities restore their streams, rivers, and wetlands by implementing practical solutions that protect water, land, infrastructure, and livelihoods.

As a trusted nonprofit partner, we work with local governments, nonprofits, and agencies to bring restoration projects to life. From identifying funding and navigating permitting to managing construction and reporting, we’re with you every step of the way.

We bring decades of experience in restoration, natural infrastructure, and water quality improvement, but just as important, we know how to listen. Our team tailors each project to fit your needs, timeline, and community.

The goal? Clean water. Healthy ecosystems. Stronger, more resilient communities.

Since its founding in April 2001, Resource Institute has helped communities restore and protect their streams, rivers, and wetlands. From the beginning, we believed that effective restoration could strengthen both ecosystems and economies and that long-term success depends on strong partnerships.

As a nonprofit, RI developed a unique project management model to support communities from start to finish, turning restoration goals into funded, implemented projects. We help shape project ideas, secure funding, coordinate with landowners, engage technical teams, and manage implementation through construction and closeout.

A turning point came in 2013 with the launch of the Western North Carolina Stream Initiative. In partnership with USDA NRCS and state agencies, the initiative brought critical funding and technical support to rural communities. It reduced erosion, safeguarded farmland, and improved water quality across the mountain region.

Alongside restoration, RI has remained committed to education. We’ve hosted workshops, regional gatherings, and national convenings, including the National Stream Restoration Conference. As we plan our fourth national conference in 2025, we continue to connect practitioners, share knowledge, and advance the science of stream and wetland restoration.

Today, RI is a trusted nonprofit partner with national reach and a strong regional focus in the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic. Our team brings deep technical experience and — just as necessary — a hands-on, collaborative spirit to every project.
